2021 Iowa Individual Grades Championship

The Iowa Grades Chess Championship will determine the top chess players in the state for each grade. The tournament is open to all Iowa students in grades Kindergarten through 12 (K-12).

Format: The tournament involves competition against opponents only from the same grade. (If there are less than 4 players in the same grade, some grades may be grouped for pairing purposes only). There are four rounds of play. Grades K-2 will have 30 minutes for all their moves per game while grades 3-12 will have 45 minute limits for games. The players will be matched using the Swiss System to minimize the number of players who win (or lose) all their games.

Round Times: Rounds for Grades K through 2 will be 10:00 am, 11:15, and 12:45, with round 4 ASAP. Rounds for grades 3-12 will be Rd 1: 10:00 am, Lunch, Noon, Rd 3: 1:30 pm, Rd 4 ASAP. The award ceremony will be right after the final round.

Entry fee:  $15 if registered by Dec 1^st, $20 after or on site. Prizes:  Trophies and medals will be awarded for:

• K-6 Grade: Trophies for 1st through 3rd place and medals for 4th through 6th place in each grade. 
• 7-12 Grades: 1st place trophy and medals for 2nd through 4th place in each grade.
• Medals will also be available for those participating in their first chess tournament. 

US Chess Membership Required: The Iowa State Chess Association is able to provide discounted US Chess Memberships for $11, which can be purchased online with your registration. Byes  One half-point bye for any round is available if requested with registration or before the start of the tournament REGISTRATION INFORMATION You will need to provide the player (1) Name, (2) School, (3) Grade, and (4) USCF ID if you have one  Online Registration:  Register and pay on line at www.onlineregistration.cc listed under the Iowa State Chess Association.  Preregistration is posted online and at the tournament site.  You may check these postings to verify that your registration is accurate and complete.  On-site check-in at the tournament is not required for advanced registrations.
