Event Overview

Gather in beautiful, diverse Bloomington, Indiana, for an exciting day of chess! In memory of Indiana chess legend Dave Herron. What better way to kick off National Chess Week!

 

  • When: Saturday, October 5, 2024

 

  • Where: Holiday Inn Bloomington - University Area, 1710 N Kinser Pike, Bloomington, IN 47404 (Hotel rate $99, call hotel to book at 812-334-3252, mention Dave Herron Memorial, rooms may sell out)

 

  • Sections: Playing by class*. Master/expert, Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, and Class E*. Players may play up one class if desired.

 

  • Time control: G60 with a 10-second increment. 

 

  • Round times: First round promptly begins at 9am. Subsequent rounds will be at approximately 12:30, 3:30, and 6:30. Arrive at the playing site no later than 8:45am. First round at 9.

 

  • Materials: Bring your own boards, pieces, and clocks. Limited sets will be available. Plan accordingly!

 

  • Concessions and lunch: There will be a short lunch break after the first round. Concessions will be available for purchase. Many restaurants are nearby.

 

  • Entry fee: $50 flat, no more, no less. Registration is possible on-site. CHECKS NOT ACCEPTED ON-SITE. Entry fee is waived for players receiving government assistance** or on free/reduced school lunch. Refunds are available up until October 4 at 11:59pm.

 

  • Prizes: $5000 B100: Master/expert: 600/400/250; A: 400/250/180; B: 400/250/180; C: 400/250/180; D: 400/250/180; E: 400/250/180. All prizes paid by Venmo, cash, or check. Prizes subject to change based on number of entries.

 

 

  • USCF membership: All players must have an active USCF membership that is NOT expired. We will be checking all registered players to ensure this.

 

 

*Corresponding ratings for each class are:

  • Master/expert: 2000+
  • A: 1800-1999
  • B: 1600-1799
  • C: 1400-1599
  • D: 1200-1399
  • E: 1000-1199
  • *Note: Players under 1000 will play in Class E.

 

**Government assistance means at least one of the following:

  • SNAP 
  • TANF
  • SSI
  • WIC
  • LIHEAP
  • Section 8
  • Medicaid
  • Free and reduced (school) lunch

Proof of receipt of at least one of the above is required to obtain the entry fee waiver. Additional services will be considered case-by-case.
