2021 World Cup: It's Down to Sam

GM Sam Shankland is the lone American standing in the 2021 World Cup and Women’s World Cup, having defeated GM Rinat Jumabayev 1½-½ in the fourth round to advance to the Round of 16. GM Jeffery Xiong was eliminated by GM Santosh Gujrathi Vidit by a score of 2-0.

Shankland ground down the Kazakh GM in the first leg of their two-game mini-match, batting back from a worse position round the time control to take the full point.
