Draws on top boards allowed Shunkai Peng of Oregon to claim the clear lead in the K-8 section, after he grinded a W in an opposite colored bishop endgame.

Round five also saw the debut of the twitch stream, hosted by IM John Bartholomew and WGM Sabina Foisor. The two popular American chess players will also host the stream on the critical rounds six and seven on Sunday at twitch.tv/uschess.

Saturday also saw a flurry of activity in the Girls’ Club Room, including a simul with WGM Katerina Nemcova, beginner’s chess lesson for Moms, and a town hall. WIM Alexey Root, who has been making frequent appearances in the room, also held a book signing in the US Chess Federation Sales Bookstore. Girls Club Room manager Leila D’Aquin took over the US Chess Women twitter feed and picked out some highlights from the day.
