Webster Wins Five in a Row

The Final Four of College Chess ended early on Friday, March 26 with Webster University capturing its fifth college crown in a row, winning every year since its program began.
Head Coach GM Susan Polgar has earned seven in a row, counting two previous years with Texas Tech University.

Texas Tech, a sort of Cinderella team this year, finished second despite being a clear ratings underdog. Saint Louis University, a brand-new entry, finished third. University of Texas-Dallas–four times former champion–managed only a disappointing fourth.
Overall, it was a big day for Saint Louis chess, with the Saint Louis Archbishops winning the first season of the PRO Chess League over Magnus Carlsen’s Norway Gnomes just a few hours after Webster claimed victory:

Look for more details on the Pan-American Championships later this week from Al Lawrence.

  1. Correction: The tournament ended on Sunday, March 26. (The article has Friday, March 26 in the first line.) I am also guessing the last line of “Look for more details on the Pan-American Championships later” should be instead “Look for more details on the President’s Cup (Final Four) later.”
