Stunning Tactics and Kasparov's Turbulent Return at the STL Rapid & Blitz

After 9 captivating rounds of rapid chess, Levon Aronian is the clear leader with 5 impressive victories. The event is far from over, however, today begins the 18 rounds of blitz games with many players still in contention, including the two American competitiors, Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura, who are tied for 2nd. Here are a few of the dazzling tactics that have taken place so far.

Tactic #1

Garry Kasparov vs. David Navara

The final day of the rapid segment was especially turbulent for Kasparov who started the day with a loss in a winning position against Navara. After playing a model positional game in the middlegame, the 13th World Champion overlooked a key defensive opportunity for his opponent. Can you find it? Kasparov has just played 49. Nc6+ nearly leading to checkmate.
Black to move.
