The two National Championships attracted no less than 11 grandmasters. GM Daniel Naroditsky, GM Zviad Izoria, GM Enrico Sevillano and GM Conrad Holt represented the Bay Area grandmaster contingent. GM Ray Robson and GM Alex Shimanov traveled from St. Louis to participate.
The 2017 CalChess State Championship took place over Labor Day Weekend at the Santa Clara Convention Center. In both the main event as well as the scholastic side event, the organizing team reported record numbers. In fact, the projected prize fund was increased by 10% because of the massive amount of entries!
Since this heritage tournament was originally founded and first held in Berkeley, CA, bringing it back to this location was extremely important emotionally for many of the players in the Northern California chess community. The historical site provided a majestic, comfortable, and intimate venue for the distinguished members of the NorCal chess community.
